Winter is the perfect time for a getaway in
Colorado. With so much to do and so many places to go, there’s something for everyone’s
taste.
Consider the following to find the perfect
place for you:
Telluride
Telluride was born in
the heyday of Colorado mining. Tucked in the southwest corner of the state,
it's known for its beauty and outdoor lifestyle. Famously, it’s also where Butch Cassidy pulled
off his first bank robbery in 1889, getting away with $20,000 (more than half a
million in today’s value).
Telluride has long been
a tourist magnet, thanks to its dining, shopping, photography tours, a thriving
art scene, and just about every winter activity you can imagine. The free gondola rides are
a form of public transportation you can’t find anywhere else. They
offer such expansive views that you can see all the way to Utah when the
skies cooperate.
The Ritz-Carlton
If you have a hankering for the lap of luxury, putting on the
ritz will do the trick. The Ritz-Carlton in Avon is an exclusive
mountainside hotel that is world famous for its opulence.
The rooms feature a homey ambiance that’s rustic meets
extravagance while the hotel offers amenities around every corner. Guests can
enjoy the complimentary eucalyptus steam room, splurge on a spa treatment, or
enjoy breakfast in bed. If you want to ski, Beaver Creek — world renown in its
own right — is just up the road.
Glenwood Springs
Glenwood Springs has been celebrating its hot water
for more than 130 years. While the pools are open year-round, they’re
particularly satisfying in the winter. When temperatures drop, they turn into
an oasis of relaxation, warmth, and serenity.
Of course, hot springs may be the hot ticket,
but they’re not all Glenwood has up its sleeve. Like many Colorado mountain
towns, it offers plenty of snow-filled fun, but it goes well beyond powder
days. It has a flourishing arts and culture scene, eclectic dining, and a
plethora of live entertainment. Check out the Glenwood Vaudeville Review, take the Doc Holiday trail, or explore the local museum.
Estes Park
Winter is the perfect
time for a getaway to Estes Park; as the cold weather moves in, the crowds move
out. Embark on a half-day snowshoe tour, take a scenic drive, go for a sleigh
ride, or enjoy wildlife viewing. Just don’t pet the elk!
Estes Park also offers
some out-of-the-box activities, ranging from winter ecology walks
led by park rangers to snow cat tours in vehicles that are one part snowmobile, one part hummer, and all
parts exhilarating.
The Broadmoor
Guests who stay at the
Broadmoor tend to stay there the entire time. With so many
activities onsite, there’s little reason to head toward the exit. The Broadmoor
offers a full-service day spa, 24 specialty shops, hot tubs, pools, ice
skating, pickleball, and tennis (which moves indoors during winter
months).
Dining at the Broadmoor is an adventure in itself;
with 17 restaurants, you’re sure to sate your cravings. You can opt for
everything from upscale steakhouses to casual cafes and lounges. The breakfast fare
is especially impressive.
It’s hard to go wrong with a Colorado getaway,
there are so many wonderful places to get away to and have a spectacular time.
